Vancouver Salmon Fishing Charter Report, Feb 5/2013
It is now February and we are right in the middle of our winter chinook season in Vancouver. We have had quite a few trips out over the last 10 days. We have been focusing on Vancouver Harbour and Bowen Island on our half day trips and the Gulf Islands on our full day trips. We have been doing really well on our longer Gulf Island trips with the lots of chinook hitting the gear. On our few times over there recently, we have averaged anywhere from 5 to 15 hook ups. There is good mix of legal fish up to 16 pounds and some larger undersize. Our local trips have been pretty hit and miss recently with only the odd fish being hooked up.
We have been running spoons exclusively in Vancouver Harbour, Howe Sound, and the Gulf Islands. Like usual trolling close to bottom has been the ticket. In Vancouver Harbour we have been fishing the QB, Jericho, and the West Vancouver shoreline. We have had most of our success trolling in 90 to 110 feet of water and working bait balls when we find them. In Howe Sound we have been running our gear deeper as per usual with most fish being taken between 130 and 200 feet. Over on the Gulf Islands the fish have been scattered from 100 feet down to 170 feet. Gibbs gypsy spoons and Silver Horde spoons in the 3 inch sizes have been the ticket for us.
As we progress in to February and March we should expect to see some of our largest fish of the winter being hooked in Vancouver Harbour and Howe Sound. Crabbing and prawning will remain to be very good as well.
