Winter Chinook Salmon Season is Here!

Winter Chinook – Prime November Target:

As we transition into the colder months, Winter Chinook (also called blackmouth) take center stage in the Vancouver and Sidney areas. These fish are smaller than the summer Chinook runs but still provide excellent sport with their strong, aggressive fights. Winter Chinook fishing typically runs from late fall through early spring, with November being an ideal time to target them from our Vancouver and Sidney locations.

Where to Find Winter Chinook:
Winter Chinook prefer deeper waters, typically ranging from 100 to 250 feet,.  From our Vancouver location, we target winter chinook salmon in Howe Sound, English Bay and sometimes make the run to the Gulf Islands.   From our Vancouver Island location in Sidney, we fish the Southern Gulf Islands and Haro Strait.

  • Fishing Techniques for Winter Chinook:
Winter Chinook are typically found near bottom.   We  use smaller spoons and hootchies in the winter.   Skinny Gs, Coho Killers and G Force Spoons and variations of spackleback hootchies are very good bets.
  • Winter Chinook Size:
Winter Chinook tend to be smaller than their summer counterparts, with fish in the 6–12 lb range being common. However, they can still put up a good fight and make for exciting fishing trips, especially for anglers looking to target multiple fish. Larger winter Chinook can occasionally reach 15–20 lbs.

Weather and Sea Conditions:

November in the Vancouver and Sidney areas can bring unpredictable weather, with rain and wind common, especially in the open waters. While some days may be rough in exposed water,  Bon Chovy has many sheltered spots to fish, including Howe Sound, Saanich Inlet, Haro Strait, and areas off the Southern Gulf Islands.. Bon Chovy Fishing Charters has the experience to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip in these cooler months.

Why November is a Great Time for Winter Chinook:

  • Less Fishing Pressure: With fewer anglers targeting Chinook salmon as the season transitions, there’s less competition, and you can enjoy a more peaceful and private fishing experience
  • Exciting Action: While they may be smaller, Winter Chinook put up a good fight and can be found in more locations than in late summer and early fall.   They are also the best eating fish of the year!
  • Amazing Scenery:   We fish some beatiful areas in Howe Sound, Haro Strait and the Gulf Islands in the winter.  Most of the time, we are fishing very protected waters.
  • Prawning:    Options for setting prawn traps on our full day trips in November!
